Hyperlocal News

Lance Armstrong is opening a bike shop in Austin, TX called Mellow Johnny’s. But its focus is commuter bikes not racing. It’s awesome that he points to PDX as a model for commuter bike culture.

“Armstrong said he’d like to see Austin evolve into a place like Portland, Ore., where biking is part of the culture and people pedal to work, to restaurants and to run errands. ‘Walk outside, and the streets are lined with bikes — because they have a safe place to ride,’ Armstrong said of the city long known for its bicycle-friendly amenities and policies.” Link.

But my reason for sharing this is that I heard about it through outside.in, which serves up hyperlocal information based on your zip. And that’s just the kind of thing I want to know about. It’s timely, it’s local/global, and it puts a little piece of cultural currency in my pocket. Nice job guys.

The newspapers are banding together to sell local classifieds on the Web in order to “control their own destiny.” But you don’t see any of them doing hyperlocal.
